For over 30 years, West House has been Cumbria’s leading care and support provider for adults, young people and children with learning and other difficulties. Every single one of our pieces is made entirely by hand by the people we support – from start to finish.
To begin with, the clay is wedged to get rid of air bubbles. The clay is then shaped and fettled into the necessary shape using a combination of hand-building and press moulding techniques. Each piece is then stamped with the initials of the potter that made it.
The pieces are left to dry out and then put into the kiln for a bisque firing. Some of our pieces are hand painted which happens at this stage. Then every item is dip glazed by hand which protects them and makes all of our pieces microwave and dishwasher safe.
Once the glaze has dried, the items go into the kiln for a final fire. This is the final stage in the process and once this is done, they are ready to sell! Make sure you lookout for the potter stamp on the bottom of your item so you can see which of our potters made it.
